Hanaa Malallah is an Iraqi artist that has survived the Iraq Iran War, the Gulf War, and the majority of the most recent invasion of Iraq until she had to flee to Europe. She has grown up around war and conflict but has a deep love for her home country. In her piece My Country Map she mourns the destruction of her home.
In this series she uses old maps of Baghdad and other Iraqi cities and collages them together. The pieces of these maps are burned to symbolize the destruction that was changed the places of her childhood. She says, “Hell is more comfortable than Iraq.
Baghdad was a beautiful city like London.”
